Here in Sacramento we have a company called California Musical Theater and one of their branches is called Music Circus. They do theater in the round. A colleague of mine has been editing highlights reels for them over the years and asked if I was interested in editing for them. I think the original idea was to have me take over the highlight videos but I kept watching those videos and thinking of the stuff they put out from New York for Broadway shows. Stuff like this. So the idea morphed a little bit and that's how I became the "Sizzle reel girl."
The rules were as follows. I could not use a single song for more than 30 seconds. I kept these videos between a minute to a minute and a half and I tried to use no more than three songs and make them flow as smoothly as possible. These had to have energy and zip and then if people wanted more they could go to the highlights for a more in depth view. My job was to hopefully get people excited about the shows.
Also, these videos came together in under 48 hours. I got the footage from the final dress rehearsal late on Monday night and by Wednesday morning a final version was ready for release.
It's been humbling to be involved in these beautiful productions doing the work I love to do. I hope these reels contributed to the success of these shows. I know I enjoyed working on each and every one of them and I'm more than a little bummed to have to wait almost an entire year before I can do this again but by all accounts I'll be hopefully be back next year with 6 more sizzle reels to my name. You can view the ones I did in my portfolio or at this handy dandy playlist and finally, my favorite edit of the season:
